A week later, Zephyr and Wilder walked to Sarah’s bakery. Zephyr didn’t really want to interact with any more humans, especially after a full day in the store, but Wilder looked so excited at the prospect of seeing his friend. He may have also bribed Zephyr with the idea of sweets, which he couldn’t pass up.

“Well, if it isn’t my favorite customer,” Sarah greeted Wilder with a smile. “And his sidekick.”

Zephyr huffed, but Wilder laughed loudly. “And if it isn’t my favorite baker.”

“You only say that so I give you free cream puffs.”

Wilder winked, not denying it, and they both burst into laughter. Without realizing it, Zephyr felt a smile cross his face. The expression felt foreign but good.

“We’re on our way to the park, so I wanted to grab a few things.” He turned to Zephyr. “What would you like?”

He peered into the glass case, mouth watering at all the options. Then, he saw one he hadn’t had since being captured that he couldn’t pass up.

“I’ll take a box of macarons,” he said, pointing to the colorful cookies.

“Excellent choice.” Sarah pulled them out, plus a doughnut for Wilder.

They talked a bit more before they took their leave, walking toward the park. Wilder was bundled up in his large coat, blue beanie, and matching scarf, his cheeks and nose red from the cold, only adding to his cuteness.

Wilder had been acting weird ever since Valentine’s Day. Zephyr wasn’t sure if it had anything to do with their hookup, but he hoped not. He knew he wanted to do it again, soon, but wasn’t quite sure how to broach the subject.

They found a bench to sit on as they looked out on the water.

“What made you open an antique shop?” Zephyr asked as they ate their treats.

“I majored in history in college,” Wilder said, still looking out at the water. “I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, but I knew I didn’t want to go to grad school, which is like your only option when you major in history. Then, I saw a job offer by chance from a local antique store, and I figured it would be a good way to pass the time while I figured it out.” He looked at his cup, his face falling.

“So you were working there?” Zephyr asked.

“Yes. For Gina Twix. She owned it originally. I guess she didn’t have any other family and couldn’t run the place on her own. I came in and started up the online presence and worked on different ways to get people in. It was the most fun I’d ever had at a job.”

“And she sold it to you?”

“No,” Wilder said sadly with a shake of his head. “She died. It was only a few years ago, and I didn’t see it coming. She passed in her sleep, and I was who they called, since she didn’t have any family. I didn’t understand how she didn’t have anyone. The woman was so kind. She used to always makeup stories about all the things in the store.
